Many fentanyl users, myself included at one point in time, are trapped between addiction and feelings of wanting to commit suicide. A crushing cycle of wanting to end your life and knowing that there is a ticket to an “accidental” death that at least gives feelings of relief if it’s not the “unlucky” one. This is a cycle of destitution and suffering. Many users are homeless within several years or even months of beginning to use fentanyl. I have an apartment in the city now, and I look outside my window and at the foot of my door at people without homes who’s lives were intact what just seems like a moment ago now sleeping under the rainfall. It is easy to believe that tomorrow will not come. Teens are affected disproportionately by distributors lacing drugs that are not intended to be bought containing fentanyl. There is no amount of blame that will keep children alive. It is not the fault of an underaged person whose intention is a night of partying that they accidentally take fentanyl, a drug designed to be medically dosed by a microscopic fraction of any other that tends to be used recreationally. Adults and children are dying and they are not the primary blame. Drugs which are finding their way back from a sixty-year hiatus into professional therapeutic settings are being poisoned by drug dealers and manufacturers that not only do not care about their impact, but sometimes wish to kill people, adults and children alike.
